What is Smudging:
Smudging is a traditional Native American method of burning sacred herbs to produce a smoke cloud. Smudging is a cleansing ritual. Smudging is used to lift away negative energy, feelings or emotions.
National Aboriginal Day is June 21:
This is a day for all Canadians to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people. With Indigenous Organizations and the Government of Canada, June 21, the summer solstice, was chosen for National Aboriginal Day. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year.
Did you know:
That we live on Treaty 6 land. This Treaty was signed on August 23,1876, August 28, 1876 at Fort Carlton and September 9, 1876 at Fort Pitt. Adhesions to the Treaty were signed at a later date.
Please come and join us!
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!
FRONT YARDS IN BLOOM NOMINATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!
Is there a great yard in your neighbourhood or on your route? Show your appreciation by nominating them for a Front Yard in Bloom Award. The Front Yard in Bloom program is a unique partnership with CUPW Edmonton Local, the Edmonton Horticultural Society and the City of Edmonton. Our local is the only local in Canada that participates in this type of program. The program celebrates and recognizes CUPW members’ involvement in the communities we work in. Last year CUPW members nominated over 1,000 yards throughout the city. Can we beat our total from last year?
Nomination Forms are available at depots, EMPP, the Union Office and the Local website. (www.cupwedm.net) Forms can also be emailed to you. Contact kmpulu@gmail,com and I will send you a form.
Nominations accepted MAY 20 – JUNE 30. If using the CUPW nomination form then the deadline is MAY 28. You can also nominate online at FrontYardsinBloom.ca or call 311. All you need is the addresses. Please indicate you are a CUPW member.
Nominate by JUNE 14 and be eligible for early bird nomination prizes.
The top 3 CUPW members who nominate the most yards will be eligible for City facility passes and be recognized at the Edmonton in Bloom awards on August 24.
NOMINATE EARLY, NOMINATE OFTEN!
Questions? Want to help? I am looking for people in the depots and EMPP to act as coordinators to distribute and collect nomination forms. Contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
